ILINX Cloud DLP: How Automatic Redaction Protects Your Data

Cybersecurity is an absolute must for any organization to understand and prevent a breach. If you have never been a direct part of a data breach, you can easily assume someone you know has or that you could experience one in the future.

Since 2020, there has been a 485% increase in data breaches, and data breaches are increasingly less likely to be reported on at all.

These data breaches often result in loss of customer trust, a lapse in business continuity, and hefty compliance fines. Even if you are not subject to compliance regulations, data breaches are incredibly detrimental and costly. The average data breach costs around $5.86M for financial services organizations and $1.29M for public service organizations.

Data breaches encompass a large variety of attacks: from the big-name examples in the news that involve millions of records affected by a data intrusion to unintentional data leaks that can happen to anybody in a work-from-home environment. Although significant data breaches are serious, they typically involve email address exposures and not necessarily PII, PCI, and PHI.

Understanding the modern data breach is more complex than most assume. There are three primary types of data breaches are:

  • Malicious attacks
  • Network failures
  • Human error, or unintended disclosure

Each type has specific types of data loss prevention tools and solutions that you can use to address concerns and secure your organization’s valuable data, such as:

  • Network DLP: Monitors and controls data flow across multiple channels such as email, file, database to keep your data within your organization’s network.
  • Cloud DLP: Secures critical data from malicious and accidental data breaches inside a Cloud environment such as SaaS applications.
  • Endpoint: Detects and prevents potential data breaches by monitoring, detecting, and blocking sensitive data while it is in use.

Malicious attacks and network failures are often addressed with large cybersecurity suites like network data loss prevention that you may already have in place. Preventing human error data breaches is trickier. With work-from-anywhere becoming the prominent working model for so many organizations, it becomes difficult to understand how your data is accessed from an endpoint perspective.

Previously endpoint data loss prevention was a simple as being in the office. Now, when your office is a coffee shop, a bed, or a plane, you have significantly less control over the eyes on your data. You are inherently more at risk than you were previously. The sectors most frequently involved in these incidents are government/public, educational, financial, health care, and non-profits.

Typical redaction tools used to prevent unintended disclosure are near-static. Often, an administrator determines what fields may have sensitive data before the software is deployed. Again, there is room for human error. There could be a missed connection between deciding what data is protected and what data is actually exposed. Static redaction may protect your data in some incidents but not all or even most, leaving your data vulnerable at the endpoint.

With a Cloud endpoint solution such as ILINX DLP, your redaction works in real-time. The software utilizes intelligent automation to find your data and protect it. The data loss prevention works in conjunction with your current processes rather than adding extra steps or even harming your endpoint users by over- or under-redacting.

With current security processes and increasing risk and data loss threats, a simple redaction tool is not enough to secure your data, even with a cybersecurity suite. Intelligent DLP software prevents unintentional disclosure and human error breaches from anywhere via the Cloud.

While it requires an ongoing investment, fully protecting your data is critical. The first essential step is to evaluate your current actions, strategies, and roadmap for the future.
